Santa Barbara

In the city known as the American Riviera you will stand under the largest shade tree in North America and inspect wagons, saddles and Western paraphernalia once owned by famous stars such as Clark Gable, Will Rogers and Jimmy Stewart. Take a stroll on Sterns Wharf. Visit Historic Landmark adobe houses built in the early 1800's along with Mission Santa Barbara, Queen of the California Missions, and take in a 360-degree panorama of the city and coastline from high in the clock tower of the County Courthouse, praised as the "grandest structure" ever built in the Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style.

Then drive inland past beautiful Cachuma Lake, one of the most picturesque spots near Los Angeles, and spend the rest of the day in the quaint, authentic little Danish village of Solvang, where you will wander between Dutch windmills in and out of bakeries and gift shops, and view replicas of the Hans Christian Andersen "Little Mermaid" and the Round Tower of Copenhagen.

Stop for a glass or two (or three or four) of the best Californian wine at one of Santa Barbara's famous wineries.
