Carmel-by-the-Sea - Monterey

Winding between San Simeon and San Francisco is some of the most breathtaking coastline anywhere in the world. The cliffs of Big Sur rise thousands of feet above the Pacific with dramatic effect. Dizzyingly tall bridges span deep river gorges along rugged, undeveloped shores.

Spend the day in the bohemian artistic enclave of Carmel-by-the-Sea, the past and present home of many notable artists, photographers, writers, and actors, including Clint Eastwood, the city's one-time mayor, Doris Day, Sinclair Lewis, Jack London, among many others. Enjoy the fairytale-like architecture of the homes and stores, and shop for some fine art or crafts.

A little further on around the peninsula in Monterey Bay you will visit Cannery Row, the street made famous and named after the setting for John Steinbeck's novel. The Monterey Bay Aquarium near the Old Fisherman’s Wharf will be recognized as a pivotal location in the movie "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home".
